Gallstones look like-
Gallstones
can vary from 1 to hundreds, anywhere from millimeters to 4 or 5 centimeters in
size. When there is only one or just a few gallstones, they tend to be round.
When a large number of gallstones are present, they tend to rub one gall and
other gallstones and grow chopped. Brown pigment gallstones can be broken or
irregular.
Will the gallstone pass?
Gallstones can pass through a
gallbladder or duct (especially when small). It is the passage of gallstones
that causes many complications.
Gallstones
are common. It occurs in about 20% of US, Canadian, and European women, but
there is a big difference in the prevalence of different ethnic groups. For
example, gallstones occur 1-2 times more often in Scandinavian and Mexican
Americans. The rate of gallstones among American Indians is over 80%. These
differences are probably explained by genetic (genetic) factors. One-degree
relatives (parents, siblings, and children) of individuals with gallstones are
1 1/2 times more likely to have gallstones than those without first-grade
relatives with gallstones. Additional support for genetic susceptibility comes
from twin studies. Thus, a pair of unequal pairs of twins (sharing 50% of the
genes) shares 8% of all gallstones. Both of the same pair of twins (100% share
of the gene) has 23% gallstones.
